NBA Hall-of-Famer Dominique Wilkins, who has type 2 diabetes, was at The English High School this morning to promote healthy choices that students can make in their daily lives.
Type 2 diabetes, formally known as adult-onset diabetes, has been reported among children and adolescents in much greater numbers. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention predicts that one in three children born now may develop diabetes during their lifetime. According to the American Diabetes Association, about two million adolescents, aged 12-19, have pre-diabetes. In order to prevent or manage diabetes, children and teenagers need to learn how to create healthy lifestyles, which includes healthy diets and regular exercise.
