“We are so thrilled that the Play Ball! Foundation has once again stepped up to the plate and is helping expand athletic opportunities for our students,” said Boston Public Schools Superintendent Carol R. Johnson. “The more enriching opportunities we can offer outside the classroom will ensure more students are engaged and excited about school. We’re proud to be a part of the Play Ball! team.”
The baseball season is in full swing with terrific competition from returning players from the Dearborn, Edwards, Frederick , Gavin, Irving, and a combined team from Jackson-Mann and Lyon schools. The season runs til June ending in play-offs for the title of 1# Middle School Baseball team in Boston. This year the coaches were trained by a Boston baseball hero – Bill Mahoney, former BU coach and current Brighton High School coach.
“Play Ball!‘s success is the direct result of a true collaboration with BPS principals, teachers, administration and the athletic department,” added Harney.
In addition to our BPS leagues Play Ball! has been sponsoring the Play Ball! City Classic Lacrosse Tournament for 4 years. This annual event brings out boys and girls (K-12) from Charlestown, South Boston, Dorchester, West Roxbury, and the greater Boston metro area. Over the weekends of May 21 and June 18th, these teams take to the field for more than 42 games.
About The Play Ball! Foundation
The Play Ball! Foundation was founded to provide Boston middle school students with a chance to play, build friendships and character through the lessons of sports – teamwork, communication and discipline. Our mission is to give Boston’s inner city children opportunities to engage in athletic activities that will enhance their physical, social and emotional development. With a single goal of Getting More Feet on the Field we work directly with Boston middle schools to understand the needs that our fundraising can address in an easy and timely manner. Play Ball! is growing with the help of our volunteers — young professionals interested in providing their time and resources and with the community of school administrators, coaches, parents and students.
