Second half surge seals a victory for the dragons

JAMAICA PLAIN — It was a tale of two halves for the Latin Academy Dragons as they edged out the Boston English 14-6 on Friday at a rain soaked English High School.  The Dragons young offensive line lead the charge in the third and fourth quarters, opening up lanes for tailback Earnest Kellough, wing back Shaver Lazarus, and quarterback Kyle Dance.

The first half was controlled by the English Blue and Blue, who took their second possession of the game 66 yards and capped off the drive with an 8-yard touchdown by senior wing back Richard Monteiro.  However, English was denied the 2 point conversion after a false start penalty backed their offense up to the 8 yard line.

The Latin Academy Dragons then turned up their defensive intensity in the 2nd quarter, stalling two English trips in the red zone.  Dragon safety Alex Guerrer came up with a crucial interception late in the 2nd quarter to prevent English’s second scoring chance.

“In the first half we came up with some big defensive plays in the red zone,” Latin Academy Head Coach Rocco Zizza said of his teams second-quarter defense. “[English] could have been up two or three touchdowns easily in the first half.  They did a great job.  They’re a good team.”

The Dragon’s offense came alive on the first possession of the third quarter. Kellough paced Latin Academy with 50 yards rushing on the drive and he spoke about his team’s outlook coming out of halftime.

“We told ourselves in the huddle, we’re a running team,” Kellough said. “We still got this.  6-0, that’s a whole new ballgame.  We came out hard in the second half.”

Quarterback Kyle Dance finished off the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run.  The ensuing extra point by kicker Alfredo Peres gave Latin Academy a 7-6 lead.

After two stalled drives by Boston English, Latin Academy was again able to reach the end zone in the fourth quarter, on a 25 yard touchdown run by Shavar Lazarus.  A second extra point by Peres made it 14-6, which sealed the victory for the Dragons.

This game was moved from White Stadium to Boston English High School because of the heavy rain that was received in the Boston area on Friday.
