By Patrick Flaherty, BPSsports Correspondent

JAMAICA PLAIN — West Roxbury came into their final game of the 2011 football season at 2-7, but they saved their best performance for last, as they came from behind to beat the Brighton Bengals 22-18 at White Stadium on Friday.

The Bengals came into the game as the heavy favorite, coming in at 5-4, and looked like the better squad early on.  On Brighton’s first play from scrimmage, Johnathan Marrero connected with Chris Desenaro for a 58 yard touchdown score.  The Bengals were unable to earn the 2 point conversion, which would be a costly habit throughout the game.

Jimenez-Fox Leads the Jets to victory

By Patrick Flaherty, BPSsports.com Correspondent

When asking football coaches what the most important aspect of the games is, they’ll tell you it’s turnovers.  And this concept certainly held true on Friday night when the East Boston Jets (3-2) took down the West Roxbury Raiders (0-4) by a score of 38-20 at Sartori Stadium in East Boston.

The West Roxbury Raiders seemed in command early in the first quarter when they forced a three and out by the East Boston offense, and then orchestrated at 76 yard drive, capped off by a 1-yard Michael Obiangwe touchdown run that gave the Raiders an 8-0 lead.

The Jets responded quickly with a 52 yard scoring drive of their own when quarterback Anthony Whitney sneaked in a 1-yard touchdown run.  The East Boston special teams then went to work in the 2nd quarter, recovering fumbles off of two squib kicks.  The Jets were then able to capitalize with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Whitney to Kyle Jimenez-Fox, and a Connor Henry 21 yard touchdown run on a reverse to make it 22-8.

With first win under its belt, Madison Park heads to Westie

A week after getting shocked by Latin Academy, Madison Park head coach Roosevelt Robinson got his first win of the season on Friday afternoon. Now the 19-year head coach will run into the grandfather of City League football.

The Cardinals will travel to West Roxbury this Friday afternoon for a 3:30 p.m. meeting with the Raiders, who are led by legendary coach Leo Sybertz.

“When I was a kid Leo coached,” Robinson said of Sybertz, who returned to the sidelines a few seasons ago after retiring in 2007 after 31 years.  “I have high respect for Leo. I have played against him as a high schooler and a coach. He always has his program ready.”

Charlestown’s Leslie sinks Westie with second-half TD runs

After trailing 6-0 at the half against West Roxbury, Charlestown running back Bobby Leslie scored two second-half TD runs to give the Townies the 15-6 win.

Charlestown (2-0) scored its first TD of the game in the third quarter on Leslie’s 21-yard run and Izer Barnes ran in the 2-point conversion to give the Townies the 8-6 lead. In the fourth quarter Leslie sealed the win on a 23-yard TD run before the 2-point conversion pass failed.

“On a good five or six occasions we had their back stopped deep in the backfield, several yards in the backfield,” West Roxbury coach Leo Sybertz said. “We didn’t wrap up well enough. He got some yards on broken plays. Broken plays are our nemesis. Right now we don’t tackle well in space.

“The team that beat us was ourselves more than Charlestown.”
